In commemorating World Education Day at the National Library, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training highlighted the theme of “learning for lasting peace.” The event, held on Wednesday, saw the President as the chief guest, advocating for decisive actions to enroll approximately 26 million out-of-school children (OoSC) in the country.
President proposed the implementation of an education emergency, the introduction of double shifts in educational institutes, and the utilization of mosques for teaching purposes as drastic measures to address the alarming issue of out-of-school children. Additionally, he suggested the creation of a mechanism to engage recent graduates and intermediate students in teaching these children, offering them a stipend for their services.
During the event, various organizations set up stalls at the venue. President took the opportunity to visit the stall arranged by the Directorate General of Basic Education and Community Schools (BECS). The Director General, Hameed Khan Niazi, briefed the president on ongoing and planned programs aimed at enrolling out-of-school children, highlighting that over 12,000 children had already been enrolled in Islamabad. President Alvi commended BECS for its efforts and encouraged the initiation of more such initiatives.
Federal Education Secretary Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, Director General of Pakistan Institute of Education Dr. Muhammad Shahid Saroya, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ahsan Bakhtawari, head of Allahwala Trust Shahid Anwar, and representatives from USAID, UNICEF, UNESCO, and JAICA were among the distinguished guests who attended the event.
The urgency of addressing the out-of-school children crisis was underscored by the President, who emphasized the importance of education in fostering lasting peace. The proposed measures aim not only to increase enrollment but also to provide opportunities for recent graduates and intermediate students to contribute to the education sector while receiving financial support.
In his visit to the BECS stall, President gained insights into the commendable initiatives undertaken by the organization, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts from various sectors to tackle the education crisis effectively. The event served as a platform for key stakeholders, including government officials and representatives from international organizations, to come together and discuss strategies to ensure access to education for all children in the country.
As the nation marks World Education Day, the call for urgent and comprehensive measures to address the educational challenges facing millions of out-of-school children resonates, setting the stage for a renewed commitment to building a more inclusive and educated society.
