The Punjab University has officially appointed Engr. Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar as the Vice-Chancellor (VC). He has replaced Asghar Zaidi, who was appointed in November 2022.

Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar has over 30 years of experience in the medical field. Throughout his career, he has held positions such as vice chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council, vice chancellor of the Information Technology University, and rector of the National Textile University.

Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar is a highly accomplished individual who has had a successful career in medicine, academia, and government. His extensive experience as a medical professional, combined with his leadership roles in various institutions, has most likely elevated him to the level of an expert in his field.

As vice chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council, vice chancellor of the Information Technology University, and rector of the National Textile University, he has demonstrated his contribution and leadership in promoting education and technology in Pakistan.

Akhtar was born in Basti Dosa, Dera Ghazi Khan, on June 15, 1962. He graduated from the University of Punjab in Lahore with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering.In 1995, he received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.

In 1988, Akhtar began his teaching career as a lecturer in chemical engineering at the University of the Punjab. He moved to Bahrain in 1995 to become a senior lecturer and the head of the chemical engineering discipline at the Bahrain Training Institute.

In 2001, he returned to serve his country as an associate professor at the University of the Punjab’s Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology. In 2004, he was appointed a professor at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, and served in this capacity until 2009.

Akhtar founded the Quality Management Division of the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology in 2002.

He is also an emeritus professor at the University of the Punjab. Previously, he was the vice chancellor of the University of Sahiwal, the rector of the National Textile University in Faisalabad, the vice chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology in Taxila, and the vice chancellor of the Information Technology University in Lahore.
