Xiaomi today unveiled a first-of-its-kind remote air charging technology. Yes, you read that right. Mi Air Charge Technology lets you remotely charge smartphones through the air by just standing near the charger. Xiaomi hasn’t revealed when it plans to commercially launch its Mi Air Charge.

In a blog post, Xiaomi explained how its remote charging technology works. The isolated charging pile is equipped with five phase interference antennas which Xiaomi says can accurately detect the location of the smartphone. Xiaomi has also developed a small antenna array with built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array” for the smartphone.

“Beacon antenna broadcasts position information with low power consumption. The receiving antenna array composed of 14 antennas converts the millimeter wave signal emitted by the charging pile into electric energy through the rectifier circuit, to turn the sci-fi charging experience into reality,” Xiaomi explained in the blog post.

The Mi Air Charge Technology is capable of charging multiple devices at the same time with 5W for each device. Xiaomi hasn’t specified the exact radius but it says “several meters.” The company also said that physical objects do not obstruct the charging efficiency in any way.

At present, Xiaomi’s remote charging technology supports only smartphones. It plans to add support for smart watches, bracelets and other wearable devices soon. The company also has plans for making all smart home devices equipped with the remote charging technology. Xiaomi aims to turn the whole house wireless through the Mi Air Charging Technology.
