The National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG) held a symposium on building a climate-resilient future, uniting experts to discuss climate resilience, disaster management, and sustainable development strategies in Pakistan.
The National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG) at the University of Peshawar hosted a crucial symposium titled “Empowering the Next Generation for a Climate Resilient Future.” This one-day event brought together leading experts, academicians, and professionals to address climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development.
The collaborative efforts of multiple prestigious institutions—including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam University, and others—underscored the significance of a united front in tackling climate challenges.
The event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Laiqat Ali, Director of NCEG, who emphasized the critical role of education and innovation in fostering a climate-resilient future. Highlighting NCEG’s ongoing academic and research efforts, he applauded the collaborative partnerships that made the symposium possible.
Ms. Nusrat Naseeb, CEO of Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan, showcased the agency’s work in disaster resilience, including landmark projects like the establishment of the first school in Gwadar. She emphasized the necessity of community-driven approaches to foster resilience in vulnerable regions.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Quaid-i-Azam University and University of Peshawar, Dr. Jan, delivered a compelling call to action, stressing the role of Pakistan’s youth in ensuring water conservation and protecting natural resources. His insights painted a vivid picture of the pressing environmental challenges that demand urgent attention.
The symposium featured sessions by esteemed experts addressing diverse aspects of climate resilience. Prof. Dr. Amjad Ur Rahman discussed strategies for constructing climate-resilient infrastructure and communities. While, Dr. Saad Khan from NCEG shared lessons from the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake, offering insights into geohazard assessments. Prof. Dr. Shahid Azam from the University of Regina, Canada, highlighted sustainable soil management for ecological balance.
Scholars from University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar added depth to the discussions on climate adaptation and geohazards.
Col. Sami Malik, Co-ordination Lead at the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan, facilitated the sessions, ensuring robust interaction among participants. A diverse audience of students, academics, and professionals contributed to the event’s vibrant atmosphere.
The symposium concluded with a recognition ceremony where Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan awarded shields to key speakers and contributors. Prof. Dr. Qasim Jan, in his closing remarks, emphasized the collective responsibility of institutions in driving climate resilience efforts. Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Shah extended a heartfelt vote of thanks, appreciating the efforts of speakers, participants, and organizers.
