New PAS Council Elected For 2024-2026 To Fuel Science Goals

The Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) recently concluded its Election of the Council for the term 2024-2026, reaffirming its commitment to promoting education and research in the pure and applied sciences domain in Pakistan. The elected Council members include distinguished individuals with expertise across diverse scientific disciplines, demonstrating a collective dedication to advancing the goals of the PAS.

The election, held on December 1, 2023, in accordance with the Academy’s Bye-Laws, saw the participation of various Fellows who cast their ballots to shape the leadership for the upcoming term.

Among the elected officials, Prof. Dr. Kauser Abdulla Malik secured the position of President unopposed, showcasing a unanimous endorsement from the Fellows.

Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him, Dr. Kausar Abdullah Malik, the Caretaker Minister for National Food Security and Research, emerged as the 20th President of the PAS. His unopposed victory signifies a strong mandate from the Fellows and positions him to lead the Academy for the term from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026.

The newly elected Council comprises Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Qaiser as Vice Presidents, Prof. Dr. M. Aslam Baig as the Secretary General, and Prof. Dr. Saleem Asghar as the Treasurer. The leadership team further includes Dr. Abdul Rauf Shakoori as Associate Secretary General, and Dr. M. Raza Shah, Dr. M. Waheed Akhtar, and Dr. Sardar Khan as Secretaries of Provincial Chapters.

Additionally, Dr. Saqib Ali, Maj. Gen. Dr. Aamer Ikram, Dr. Ahmad Mukhtar Khalid, and Dr. Asghari Maqsood have been elected as Executive Members, contributing their expertise to the collective vision of the Academy.

Dr. Abdullah Malik, in a press release, pledged to utilize all available resources and implement effective measures to advance higher education and research in Pakistan. He acknowledged the PAS Fellows as “shining stars of the highest scientific abilities,” emphasizing the importance of their experience and capabilities in furthering the Academy’s goals.

The newly elected Council is poised to officially assume office on January 1, 2024, marking the beginning of a new era for the PAS. As it takes charge, the PAS is set to continue its pivotal role in fostering a culture of learning, research, and innovation in Pakistan, solidifying its position in the forefront of scientific excellence.
