DUET Takes Third Place In UNIDO Global Call 2023 Award Ceremony

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Global Call 2023 Award Ceremony, which was held at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, saw the Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) emerge victorious, taking third place in the Clean Energy Innovation category.

DUET’s accomplishment shines a spotlight on the innovative strides made by Professor Zeeshan and his team, who introduced a cutting-edge Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) solution designed to address challenges in wind energy production, particularly in regions with low natural wind speeds.

Professor Zeeshan emphasized the project’s focus on enhancing the stability of wind power provision by incorporating an auxiliary system. Drawing an analogy to solar systems, he highlighted the intermittent nature of wind availability throughout the year.

The auxiliary system, a novel addition to the existing infrastructure, ensures the production of wind even under conditions of very low natural wind speeds. This groundbreaking innovation utilizes both natural and artificial wind sources, guaranteeing a continuous wind energy supply within a capacity ranging from 300 to 1,000 watts.

The success of this VAWT system is already evident, with its deployment in Karachi, Pakistan, drawing global attention at the CIEE’23 and capturing the interest of international investors. The technology’s versatility holds promise for diverse applications, from serving underserved communities to powering hospitals, residential areas, and commercial spaces, aligning seamlessly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The visionary project received crucial support from key organizations, including Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), HANDS Pakistan, medico international (Germany), Paktech Instruments Company, and Carol Technology. Their unwavering backing played a pivotal role in achieving this remarkable milestone.

This achievement not only celebrates the brilliance of the DUET team but also highlights the potential of Pakistani innovation on the global stage. As the accolades pour in, Professor Zeeshan encourages sustained momentum, envisioning a future where these sustainable energy solutions uplift communities and contribute to a greener, more inclusive world.

The UNIDO Global Call 2023 Award is a valuable opportunity for innovators to showcase their work and receive recognition for their contributions to sustainable industrial development.
