Nova Innovation Deploys Floating Solar Demonstrator in Scotland

Nova Innovation, a leading marine energy company, has successfully deployed a cutting-edge marine floating solar demonstrator to provide power for Forth Ports’ headquarters in the Port of Leith, Scotland. Nova’s expertise in managing subsea power stations has paved the way for the development of robust floating solar technology. This installation aligns with Forth Ports’ commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2042.

Forth Ports’ strategic focus centers on developing world-leading infrastructure at its ports to facilitate the energy transition and create high-quality green jobs. Investment in such infrastructure not only aids in the transition to Net Zero but also sets the stage for emerging technologies like Nova’s marine floating solar technology.

The marine solar demonstrator was designed and installed by Nova over the summer, demonstrating its resilience by successfully generating electricity even during the formidable ‘Storm Babet’ in October. This promising performance sets a strong foundation as the technology gears up for the challenges of the Scottish winter.

David Webster, Director of Energy for Forth Ports, expressed excitement about incorporating floating solar into operations at the Port of Leith. He emphasized that working with Nova Innovation reflects their commitment to driving progressive change within the maritime industry and supports their goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2032 and Net Zero carbon emissions by 2042.

Simon Forrest, CEO of Nova Innovation, highlighted the potential of floating solar technology. With water covering two-thirds of the planet, it offers a promising means of harnessing abundant solar energy while preserving valuable land space. Nova is proud to have deployed the first floating solar demonstrator at Forth Ports and is already working on larger installations.

According to Nova Innovation, the potential for floating solar is immense. DNV, a trusted authority in the field, envisions a potential market of a staggering 4,000 GW of floating solar capacity. This underscores not only the vast potential of floating solar but also the pivotal role that Nova plans to play in the global movement toward achieving energy security and Net Zero using renewable energy.

This significant milestone represents a stride forward in advancing sustainable energy solutions and demonstrates the potential for innovative technologies to contribute to the global transition towards a greener and more sustainable future. Nova Innovation’s pioneering work in floating solar technology showcases a promising avenue for expanding renewable energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.
