UAE Launches Diploma In Nuclear Technology For Barakah Energy Plant

The first Diploma in Nuclear Technology (DNT) has been announced by Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), a joint venture operating and maintenance subsidiary of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), to provide the upcoming generation of climate change leaders with the knowledge and training required to work at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.

As part of its initiatives to create a viable nuclear energy sector in the United Arab Emirates, Nawah is committed to Emiratization (UAE). The Al Dhafra Region in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will host the Barakah Plant and ENEC’s main offices, where the programme will be presented.

For high achievers, the DNT is a 24-month entry-level programme. The program’s goal is to inspire, assist, and nurture the next generation of UAE citizens to learn about and pursue a career in the nuclear industry. After successfully completing the training and assessment programme, the first group of recent high school graduates will start working at Barakah as Local Operators.

Students will gain the fundamental knowledge and comprehension of science, engineering, and nuclear plant systems needed to perform the duties of the Local Operators at Barakah.

Chief Executive Officer of Nawah Engineer Ali Al Hammadi declared, “We are committed to operating the Barakah Plant to the highest standards of excellence and efficiency, by highly skilled operations teams. Our trainees will gain knowledge and understanding of nuclear energy through the Diploma in Nuclear Technology, as well as the crucial role local operators play in assisting the production of clean energy. Our commitment to training UAE nationals for employment is just as significant as our commitment to safe operations.

“This programme is a fantastic opportunity for bright, recent high school graduates to come and receive top-notch training to join one of the most significant sectors for the production of clean electricity, which is essential to expanding the Net Zero economy.”

“It is important for us to offer training opportunities that cater for the range of talents and educational levels in the UAE, and this inclusive approach will undoubtedly add to the richness and diversity of skills we have across our teams,” the speaker continued.

Over the course of the Barakah Plant’s operating life, which is expected to be at least 60 years, it will continue to offer highly specialised jobs, allowing thousands of UAE citizens to establish stable careers in the sector. Young UAE nationals with the necessary skills and expertise to work in the clean energy sector will have more opportunities as ENEC looks to pursue opportunities in cutting-edge technologies and clean molecule generation.

The Barakah Plant is now one unit away from full-fleet operations and achieving ENEC’s commitment to generating up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity demand, playing a significant role in the country’s transition to clean energy. Barakah, the first multi-unit operating Plant in the Arab World, already produces more than 80% of the clean electricity used in the Abu Dhabi Emirate.
