Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has revealed the creation of an AI startup. There are several engineers at the new startup, xAI, who have previously worked at OpenAI and Google.

Mr. Musk has previously stated that he thinks AI advancements should be put on hold and that the industry requires regulation.

He claimed that the purpose of the xAI startup was to “understand reality.”

The amount of funding the organisation has, its precise goals, and the type of artificial intelligence the business wants to concentrate on are all unknown.

The mission of xAI, according to the company’s website, is to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

A Twitter Spaces chat hosted by the new company on Friday revealed more information about its goals.

One of the original backers of OpenAI, which later gave birth to the well-known large language model ChatGPT, was Elon Musk. This model has grown in popularity—often contentiously—for uses like assisting students with their homework.

However, the relationship between the billionaire and the company has gotten worse. He criticised ChatGPT for being biassed towards liberal causes.

TruthGPT is what we need, Mr. Musk tweeted in February.

Additionally, he disapproves of the way ChatGPT has been managed and its close association with Microsoft.

In an interview with CNBC, Musk said, “It does seem strange that something can be a nonprofit, open source and somehow transform itself into a for-profit, closed source.”

Mr. Musk signed an open letter in March asking for a break from “Giant AI Experiments,” which has received about 33,000 signatures as of this writing.

Mr. Musk stated that he had been concerned about AI safety for more than ten years in an interview with the BBC in April.

To make sure that AI does not endanger the public, he said, “I think that a regulatory body for oversight should be established.”

Due to the data that AI companies use to train chatbots—software that learns how people interact by gathering reams of information from various sources to fuel its knowledge and interaction styles—Mr. Musk has also aligned himself against these businesses.

The billionaire thinks Twitter should receive fair compensation because huge amounts of its data are scraped from the website.

The microblogging platform was bought by Mr. Musk in a deal worth billions, but he then made significant changes that caused many users to leave the service in protest, including Shonda Rhimes, the creator of hit television series like Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton, model Gigi Hadid, and comedian and actor Stephen Fry.
