European startup Mistral AI, which focuses on generative AI, recently disclosed that it has closed a seed-stage financing round of over €105 million led by Lightspeed.
Mistral AI, generative AI startup was founded by important figures from the AI research teams at Meta and Alphabet, will give companies the fundamental tools they need to automate current operations and create ground-breaking new products using cutting-edge large language models.
The other two co-founders of Mistral, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, were students at École Polytechnique and École Normale Supérieure when Arthur, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, first met them.
Arthur, Guillaume, and Timothée are just a few of the talented founders in the artificial intelligence industry who have met thanks to our global presence. These seasoned researchers have a clear vision for a European open source project that seeks to dominate the field of generative artificial intelligence globally.
To make this ambition a reality outside of the technical sphere, they understand that they must surround themselves with the right partners. Exceptional talent can be found in and around Mistral, and we look forward to what this complementary team will accomplish.
The three founders are among a small group of individuals with extensive technical knowledge and experience running sizable labs. They all have one thing in common: while working on cutting-edge Machine Learning applications in some of the biggest AI labs, they developed technical expertise in their respective fields.
At DeepMind, Arthur contributed to the Retro, Flamingo, and Chinchilla projects, while Guillaume and Timothée oversaw the creation of the LLaMa large language models. At the start of the year, LLaMa took the world by storm and ignited a passion for open source after the model weights were leaked.
With investments in businesses like Stability, Grafana, Yugabyte, Elementor, and Mulesoft, open-source enthusiasm is gaining steam. Using open-source, Europe has created industry-defining companies, and Mistral intends to stand on the shoulders of these titans. This open-source philosophy is especially important in AI, where much of the field’s research is done in closed facilities.
The goal of Mistral is to develop a respectable open-source alternative to some of the pioneers of the Large Language Model while giving back to the community.
It is important to recognise the value of open source for business customers. By choosing open source, Mistral allays worries about lock-in and “black box” models that might cause legal and commercial issues.
Strong research foundations exist for the European ecosystem, with well-known initiatives like Stable Diffusion and Scikit-learn. Python packages for machine learning were created by the CompVis group at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Parietal group at Inria, where Arthur Mensch, CEO and co-founder of Mistral, also received his PhD. This significant funding round is especially exciting for the ecosystem.
Politicians and world leaders are aware of the significance of AI in the new global order, which has given Europe a significant role in the field. While upholding European ideals and advancing digital sovereignty, Europe must continue to be a hub for innovation.
The company is concentrating on forming alliances with European founders who have similar levels of ambition after opening offices in the UK, Germany, and France. Fast-moving talent and financial flywheels make it possible for ambitious projects like Mistral to emerge and take centre stage on the global stage.
The investment in Mistral and all of the portfolio companies in Europe reflects the company’s conviction that this ecosystem will produce a new generation of global players.
