Dubai – Moroccan startup Douar Tech won the “Diversity Role Model of the Year” category and was one of the 15 Northern regional winners of the Global Startup Awards (GSA) Africa 2022/23.
The winners were revealed at GITEX Africa 2023, which was held in Marrakech last week. According to GSA cofounder and announcer Caitlin Nash, choosing Morocco as the host nation was a “significant move” given that the winners represented the best startups in their respective home countries and regions.
A Moroccan organisation called Douar Tech works to improve the abilities of society’s most vulnerable individuals, such as young people, women, and residents of rural and peri-urban areas.
The association uses blended learning models and networking initiatives through its entrepreneurial ecosystem to prioritise entrepreneurship training, web development, and technologically comprehensive skills.
The inclusion of Moroccan youth in the socioeconomic sphere has been made possible by the Douar Tech empowerment model. Additionally, it has expanded its efforts to include the continent of Africa.
The GITEX conference has been held in Dubai since 1981, and GITEX Africa is its first foray into international markets.
The event brought together regional and international leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss new opportunities for collaboration with the aim of achieving the adoption of next-generation technology in Africa.
Launched in 2021, GSA Africa is a platform that helps promising African startups find opportunities to showcase their products. It is regarded as Africa’s biggest independent startup platform.
Solutions for agriculture, climate change, commerce, education, healthcare, and mobility & logistics were this year’s GSA fields of interest.
Interest was also sparked by startups that proposed and used Web 3.0 technologies, sustainable business models, green innovation, and diversity in the workplace.
All 54 African countries participated in the competition this year, and there were 71 regional winners overall, including 15 from North Africa, including Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. The winners will take part in the GSA Grand Finale and the Continental Finals.
The Global Innovation Initiative Group (GIIG), the competition’s investment partner, aims to fund and grow African solutions to address current global challenges. Winners will have the opportunity to work with GIIG.
The CEO of Remooz, the “Best Web 3.0 startup” in the area, Marwan Salem, called this chance a “encouragement for building and better connecting the African ecosystem which has more talent than support.”
The co-founder of GSA Africa and GIIG, Jo Griffiths, affirms that startups like Hiryo, Tile Green, and Bonbell are proof that Africa is the continent of the future for technology from Algeria to Mauritania.
