An agreement between the University of Essex and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) paves the way for future Pakistani scholars to apply for Chevening scholarship.

Beginning on August 8, 2023, individuals who wish to pursue a one-year master’s degree in the UK in one of the chosen fields of climate change/sustainability or heritage/museum studies may do so by way of a customized programme with the University of Essex, through the Chevening website (www.chevening.org).

Given that 33 million people were affected by the devastating floods that occurred in Pakistan last year and were linked to climate change, 10% of the nation was submerged, and both of the available fields—Climate Change/Sustainability and Heritage/Museum studies—are extremely pertinent to the country.

The floods also had a negative impact on the nation’s rich cultural heritage, causing harm to places like the Moenjodaro UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Amri Site Museum, and the Sehwan Folk and Craft Museum, among others. This new scholarship pathway will provide long-term capacity building assistance as the UK assists Pakistan in its flood reconstruction efforts.

Jo Moir, the development director at the British High Commission in Islamabad, spoke at the signing ceremony and said:

“Congratulations on signing the Memorandum of Understanding, Chevening Scholarship Program and University of Essex. Mid-career professionals working in the fields of heritage and museum studies, climate change and sustainability, and both have the opportunity to pursue their master’s degrees at Essex University thanks to this partnership.”

“Chevening is a prime example of the UK-Pakistan partnership at its finest. As scholars return to Pakistan and use the advantages of their UK experience to make a difference in their chosen fields, it is a transformative experience for both them and Pakistan.”

While Professor David O’Mahony, the University of Essex’s Dean for Partnerships, stated:

“The University of Essex has a long history of welcoming talented Pakistani students to study, conduct research, and develop within our University’s vibrant international community.”

“The University of Essex is honoured to be the first UK university to offer Chevening Partnership Scholarships for Pakistan because we have a long and proud tradition of welcoming talented students from all over the world through the Chevening Scholarship programme.”

“We are accepting applications for postgraduate Master’s scholarships in either the field of climate change/sustainability or heritage & museum studies to coincide with the signing of the Chevening-Essex MOU.”

“We have a solid reputation abroad in these fields and were recently ranked 56th globally in the Times Higher Education Global Impact Rankings, which recognize the top universities for supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
