The South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council’s (SATRC-23) Workshop on Policy, Regulation, and Services (PRS) got underway at a local hotel in Islamabad.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is hosting the three-day workshop, which brings together experts and decision-makers from all over South Asia to discuss important issues pertaining to emerging technologies, legislation, and policies in the telecommunications industry.

Mr. Masanori Kondo, Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), gave a welcome speech to kick off the event. He urged the participants to participate in the insightful conversation and praised the PTA for organising the workshop.

The opening remarks by DG S&D, who serves as the Chair of the SATRC Working Group on Policy, Regulation, and Services, came next (PRS). In his inaugural speech, Chairman PTA, Mr. Muhammad Naveed, emphasised the significance of Pakistan’s telecommunications industry and noted its rapid evolution.

In order to guarantee that high-quality services are provided in a way that is safe and advantageous to the public, the regulator has a key role to play.

The Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom (MoIT&T), Mr. Navid Ahmed Shaikh, delivered the keynote address at the event and emphasised the importance of emerging technologies in stimulating innovation and regional economic growth.

Three sessions were offered on the workshop’s first day, with the first covering an overview of APT, SATRC, and the workshop. The following session covered cutting-edge technologies as well as the shifting landscape of policy, regulation, and connectivity.

Topics covered included the metaverse, the Internet of Things (IoT), WLAN evolution (Wi-Fi 6e), the next generation of mobile telephony (Terrestrial and Satellite 6G), as well as free space optical (FSO, i.e., wireless communication in THz and beyond). The third session covered the ecosystem and policies surrounding 5G technology.

Three days will pass during the SATRC Workshop on PRS as experts from South Asian nations discuss a variety of topics. The sharing of telecom active infrastructure, OTT services and applications, NGSO satellite constellations, sustainability, and cooperative aspects of regulations are a few of the important subjects.
