In order to lessen its own climate change challenges, Pakistani experts and officials said on Wednesday that the nation should take lessons from China’s green development initiative.
Speaking at a conference titled “The Need to Switch Towards a Greener Future: Lessons from China” hosted by the Pakistan-China Institute (PCI) and Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad, participants argued that China has set the standard for green development that the rest of the world should emulate.
Head of the defence committee of the Pakistani Senate and president of the PCI, claimed that over 150 freak weather events occurred in Pakistan over the course of the last 20 years, including avalanches, flash floods, and forest fires among others. 33 million people were affected by the floods in Pakistan last year, which served as an effective illustration of the climate change crisis, the president of PCI continued.
Since many developed nations continue to deny that there is a problem with climate change, he continued, “We are very grateful to China and its leadership for taking the issue of climate change forward.” In addition to switching to renewable energy, Syed claimed that China also introduced green technology, creating millions of jobs.
Abid Qaiyum Suleri, executive director of the SDPI, said during the event that agriculture cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor helps Pakistan not only overcome the problem of food security but also promotes green development.
“In Pakistan, saline conditions are allowing certain Chinese rice varieties to grow crops. Through nature, the environment is being greened “Added he.
Using China as an example of how to successfully reduce pollution, PCI Executive Director Mustafa Hyder Syed claimed that Pakistan can learn from China’s approach to reducing urban pollution. The improvement in Beijing’s air quality, the city’s abundance of vegetation, and the reduction in smog all demonstrate China’s dedication to environmental protection, he continued.
