Gandhara Nissan Limited (GNL) in association with Chery – a Chinese automobile manufacturer – is reportedly planning to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan. Gandara Nissan’s officials spoke to The News, where they revealed their plans to establish a new manufacturing plant for electric vehicles in order to launch them in Pakistan in the next three years.
During a meeting with Fareena Mazhar, the Board of Investment (BoI) Secretary, Gandhara Nissan officials informed that the electric vehicles will be launched in Pakistan under the EV policy for four-wheeled vehicles which has not been implemented yet by Pakistan’s government.
According to reports, a brown-field investment plan worth 2.4 billion was presented infront of the Board of Investment (BoI), by the Chief Operating Officer of Gandhara Nissan Limited, Muazzam Pervaiz, and a few other company officials. The plan revealed that several passenger vehicles including, all-electric cars, crossover SUVs, saloon cars and family hatchbacks will be introduced in Pakistan.
Prior to this development, around one month back, Gandhana Nisaan Limited also announced to soon introduce the Chery Tiggo 8 in Pakistan, which is a crossover SUV, similar to Toyota Fortuner and KIA Sorento.
Details pertaining to the electric vehicles’ price point or the exact date of their launch have not been revealed as of yet.
At the end of last month, Federal Minister for Science Technology Fawad Chaudhry had announced that the government will soon finalize the mechanism for the successful implementation of ‘EV Policy for 4-Wheelers’ in the country to boost the economy, reduce pollution levels and generate employment in the transport sector.
Talking to a private news channel, Fawad said there was a delay in the issuance of an ordinance but hopefully it would be addressed soon, adding, EV policy proposals would be presented to President Arif Alvi for its final approval.
Electric Vehicle (EV) policy for four-wheelers, outlining several new rules related to import and export of vehicles, taxation, registration, and customs duty, among others, he added.
Minister said that the public would be able to avail cheaper transport facilities under this new policy as PTI led government is promoting EVs in the country.
