American electric car manufacturer Tesla intends to export Model 3 cars assembled at its Shanghai plant to Europe. This was reported on Monday by the Xinhua News Agency.
The first batch of Chinese-made Tesla sedans will depart from Shanghai next Tuesday and arrive in Zeebrugge’s Belgian port at the end of November. These vehicles will be sold in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland.
“Based on the strong advantages of the production chain in China and the advanced level of production [of the Shanghai factory], the Chinese Model 3 demonstrates competitiveness in the global market,” Sun Gang, operations and technical director of the Shanghai Tesla factory was quoted as saying.
In December 2019, the Ministry of Industry and Informatization of China included the Tesla Model 3 in the list of cars powered by new energy sources, whose manufacturers can count on government subsidies.
The Tesla Model 3 is an electric 5 – seat sedan; its updated standard version has a power reserve of 468 km. The car’s maximum speed is 225 km/h, and the acceleration time to 100 km/h is only 5.6 seconds. In the US, this model’s initial price is $31.7 thousand, in Germany – more than $50 thousand, in France – more than $58 thousand, and in China – $36.8 thousand.
The factory in Shanghai is the only company outside the United States that builds Tesla electric vehicles. The agreement on its construction was signed in July 2018. Tesla plans to increase its annual production to 500 thousand cars gradually. This project’s total investment will amount to about 50 billion yuan (about $7.2 billion).
