STAFF REPORT FBD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) teams jointly conducted two successful raids at Lahore areas of Zakir Plaza near Thokar Niaz Baig and Manga Mandi, and seized illegal gateway exchanges involved in grey international calls using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
These successful raids, which were made possible because of the continuous monitoring, shows the commitment and persistent efforts PTA was putting in curbing the menace of grey traffic.
During the raid at Manga Mandi, as many as VoIP-GSM Gateways and hundreds of mobile SIMs along with other supportive hardware were seized in operational condition, said an official of the PTA.
The culprit running the said exchange was also arrested by FIA. The raids resulted at Zakir Plaza near Thokar Niaz Baig confiscated illegal setups consists of sixteen operational VoIP-GSM Gateways and other supportive hardware.
This illegal exchange was utilizing four DSL connections for termination of Grey International calls.
It may be added that PTA is observing the international traffic coming in to the country, round the clock to detect gray telecom traffic.
The major purpose of monitoring is to identify the illegal gateway exchanges and track the elements operating them. Such exchanges bring huge loss to the national exchequer as well as to the telecom sector.
