STAFF REPORT IBD: A new variety of mango titled “new Sindhri” has been developed by the department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF). Presently, it is undergoing various tests including shelf life in a model reefer container.
The new variety was shown by Dr Asif Ali, Director Research, Innovation and Commercialisation, UAF, to the two-member delegation of All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA), headed by Chairman, Waheed Ahmed and Secretary General, Mohammad Ilyas Khan during their recent visit to UAF.
In light of the work being done by UAF in the field of Research and Development, PFVA announced that it would bear expenses of one student perusing his PhD programme at UAF to subsequently serve the industry in the field of fruits and vegetables.
They also said that that the Association would also extend internships to students of UAF in future and graduates would be extended employment opportunity in the PFVA. The UAF would workout the salary package as per market conditions.
They were of the view that if the new mango variety initiative show progress, it would be a good addition to the already number of mango varieties.
