STAFF REPORT IBD: Pakistan has recently celebrated the Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) under this years theme: “Women and Girls in ICT”.
Purpose of World Telecom Day is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other ICTs can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
A number of events were arranged in the country particularly in the federal capital to commemorate the day.
In this regard, an important event was arranged at the Pak-China Center by the Ministry of Information Technology with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani as the chief guest. On the occasion, the PM Rs. 300 million fund for the girls studying IT.
He also announced the creation of a venture capital of Rs. 1 billion that will encourage innovation, entrepreneurship research and development in the IT industry.
The inauguration of PTCL celebration of achieving Pakistans first one million broadband customers was also amongst the features of the day.
To mark the day, PTA Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yaseen also said that almost 92 per cent of population in the country has access to telecom services. “There are still many areas in the country where despite the prevalence of favourable telecom regime the fruits of ITCs are not accessible to many especially the women.”
