Int'l Conference On Pathogen Transmission Beyond Borders Held In Pakistan

In an effort to shed light on the intricate dynamics of pathogen transmission between species and across borders, the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), Alliance of International Science Organization (ANSO), and Monbukagakusho-MEXT Alumni Association of Pakistan (MAAP) jointly organized a three-day ANSO-PAS-MAAP Conference on “Pathogen Transmission Beyond Borders: Understanding the Complexities of Cross-Species Infectious Diseases.” The event was inaugurated on October 16, 2023, at the Pakistan Academy of Sciences Auditorium.

The conference convened a consortium of 40 distinguished scholars, both nationally and internationally renowned, to delve into the imperative facets of cross-species infectious diseases. Additionally, 36 carefully curated posters were presented, encompassing various thematic explorations centered around pathogen transmission beyond borders.

With over 450 participants, including academicians, scientists, researchers, and postgraduate scholars from around the world, the conference aimed to foster an intellectual discourse surrounding the challenges of pathogen transmission and its potential ramifications.

Professor Dr. Tasawar Hayat, Secretary General of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, welcomed the esteemed guests and emphasized the Academy’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research across diverse scientific disciplines.

The event was graced by H.E. Prof. Dr. Kausar Abdulla Malik, Federal Minister of National Food Security and Research, who highlighted the criticality of understanding inter-species pathogen transmission. He underscored that this issue is not only a scientific endeavor but also a global mission that necessitates collaborative efforts.

Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman HEC, expounded on the significance of zoonotic infections and emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing and public awareness in dealing with emerging pathogens.

Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Khan, President PAS, commended the collaborative institutions and the dedicated organizing team for their commendable efforts in organizing the event. He drew attention to recent outbreaks instigated by the transmission of pathogens across international boundaries.

Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, President MAAP and Convener of the Conference, delivered the keynote speech, expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts in orchestrating this significant event. He highlighted the advancements in research pertaining to inter-species pathogen transmission.

Dr. Muhammad Ali, Focal Person of the Conference, and Principal Investigator of the ANSO Project on Bats viruses, discussed ongoing research on various viruses detected in bat guano samples. He emphasized the use of noninvasive methods for molecular identification and their impact on surveillance and optimization of research protocols for bat virome detection.
