Two new lists, USA Today’s America’s Climate Leaders 2023 and Forbes’ Net Zero Leaders 2023, have recognised Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) for its carbon reduction targets and sustainability initiatives.
According to Josh Raglin, Chief Sustainability Officer for Norfolk Southern, “Rail is the safest, most environmentally friendly way to move freight over land, and our customers avoid 15 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually by choosing Norfolk Southern.”

The USA Today’s list of America’s Climate Leaders 2023 highlights the American businesses that have reduced their core emissions intensity the most. Between 2019 and 2021, Norfolk Southern reduced its core GHG emissions by 13.5%.
The 2023 Forbes Net Zero Leaders 2023 highlights the 100 U.S. companies that are best positioned to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions and transition to a low-carbon economy by 2050. Only a small number of transport firms were recognised on the list, including Norfolk Southern.
With a base year of 2019, Norfolk Southern has set a science-based goal to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 42% by 2034. The company is currently on track to achieve this target.
