China Continues To Lead South Korean SCI Papers

South Korean SCI papers totaled 83,680 in 2021, up 8.9 percent from the previous year, according to the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning.

With a 2.4 percent global share, it placed 12th overall. China, which was at the top of the list in 2020 and recorded 18.68 percent in 2021, came in first place.

In second place with 15.17 percent was the United States. In terms of citations in 2021, China had 1,387,605 while the United States had 1,141,763. With 169,443, South Korea came in at number twelve.

Between 2017 and 2021, there were 7.7 citations on average per paper worldwide. The highest average was in Singapore (14.9), and South Korea was in 33rd place (8.53). Clinical medicine research papers published the most (15,173) in South Korea, followed by engineering (13,730), materials science (9,686), and chemistry (9,480).

It placed fifth in engineering, fourth in the number of papers in materials science, and 19th in the category of space science.

The institute stated, “This is because the same applies to those with higher rankings,” adding, “South Korean number of SCI papers and five-year citations per paper continued to increase without the relative rankings rising.”

Under the MSIT (Ministry of Science and ICT), KISTEP, a government-affiliated research institute, has played a key role in fostering technological innovation by supporting the full cycle of Korea’s national R&D system, including S&T planning, budget allocation and coordination, and R&D evaluation.

A subset of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), the Science Citation Index (SCI) includes journals that rank highly in highly cited core journals. Online access is available for both SCI and SCIE listed journals, but only SCI journals are offered in CD/DVD format.

A scientific journal is a periodic publication used in academic publishing with the goal of advancing science, frequently by disseminating research findings to readers. They are typically discipline-specific, and authors choose which one to send their manuscripts to.
