Airbus Defence and Space has announced a manufacturing agreement for Angeo-1, Angola’s first extremely high-performance Earth observation (EO) satellite, as part of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit. Airbus Defence and Space will construct Angeo-1 in France, enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

A thorough training programme will also be offered to Angolan engineers as part of the partnership in order to develop domestic competencies through targeted knowledge transfer.

Angeo-1, an S250 optical satellite from Airbus, builds on the company’s more than three decades of expertise in producing extremely dependable space systems. Once operational, it will be the most sophisticated satellite in the area, establishing Angola as a major player in space.

The life of Angolan citizens will be improved as a result of this EO satellite continued support of the nation’s development in numerous sectors.

The development of infrastructure, the mapping of natural resources, and maritime surveillance, including fisheries, agriculture, and population, will all benefit greatly from sovereign access to satellite imagery.

Additionally, it will improve understanding of the causes of and effects of climate change on the economy, including monitoring of droughts, sea level rise, and water resources. With improved response times and less asset loss, this will result in better preparedness for natural disasters.

According to Airbus’s Head of Space Systems, Jean-Marc Nasr: “Earth’s life is supported by space. This is why I felt honoured to support Angola’s forward-thinking space plans alongside Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Joo Lourenço. As Angola‘s key space partner, Airbus will provide a modern Earth observation satellite to aid in social and economic development, including a variety of strategic tasks like managing priceless mineral resources and urban planning.”

Angola has already developed various operational applications using satellite imagery from Airbus Defence and Space, such as land use mapping, agriculture monitoring and maritime surveillance and also operates its telecommunications satellite (Angosat-2)
