The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established in February 1958 by an act of parliament for the integrated and rapid development and maintenance of the country’s water and power resources.

This includes controlling soil salinity and water logging in order to rehabilitate affected land and strengthen the country’s primarily agricultural economy.

WAPDA has developed Water Vision 2025, a comprehensive $25-33 billion National Water Resource and Hydropower Development Programme. Water Vision 2025 projects are expected to produce 16,000 MW of hydropower.

Other objectives include preventing water shortages, limiting drought, and increasing water storage for a growing population. The President of Pakistan has announced five massive hydropower projects that will be completed by 2016, with a total capacity of 9,500 MW. Two of the projects are ready for construction, while the other three are in the stages of feasibility studies and tender document preparation.
