STAFF REPORT ISB: Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Ansar Pervez has said that there is no threat to under-construction nuclear power plants in Karachi from tsunami or earthquake, adding that a mechanism is in place for controlling radiation in case of any accident.
He expressed these views while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Reform, which met here recently under the chairmanship of Abdul Majeed Khan.
The PAEC chairman briefed the committee about the Chashma Nuclear Power Projects, current status of nuclear power at Chashma, its performance, cost of per unit electricity and project financing.Dr Ansar said that the cost of electricity generated from these power plants would be Rs 6.75 which is cheapest as compared to all other sources. He said that material which is used in plant is imported from China, however, some material is self-made whereas for supplying electricity to grand work of transmission lines is in progress.
He said that two new under construction nuclear plants are in last phases for producing 1100 MW. He assured the committee that nuclear power houses have no danger from tsunami and earthquake.
On the occasion, the IESCO chief executive also briefed regarding newly built grid stations and installation of new transformers into these stations.
