STAFF REPORT IBD: The government has withdrawn all taxes and duties on from Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency products apparently in order to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in the country.
The impact of this order can be judged that according to rough estimates, the prices will fall by 38 per cent and approximately 7-8 MW of solar alone will be imported resultantly adding 7-8 MW to much needed electricity demand.
It is also worth mentioning that most of the beneficiaries will be those poor communities which are not connected to the national grid through government projects and donor energy interventions.
The Renewable and Alternative Energy Association of Pakistan (REAP) is committed to overcome the mince of loadshedding. The supply and demand can only be met if the government focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency. It is roughly estimated that alone on outdoor lighting we can save more than 700-800 MW immediately if the municipalities and the cantonment boards go efficient in their outdoor lighting.
The national grid can be energized through renewable energy and energy efficiency, if the net metering is taken into account by the DISCOS which is the success story of the renewable energy and energy efficiency in the West.
