Plastic shopping bag poses a stern hazard to the environment to combat this menace; Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) takes preemptive measures and introduce environment friendly bio-degradable shopping bags in collaboration with four companies.
Climate Change Division (CCD) stated that the environmental friendly initiative has already been launched in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) areas in addition to well-known stores in ICT which are already doing so; small departmental stores have also been instructed to use the bio-degradable shopping bags.
It’s pertinent to mention that unlike plastic bags, biodegradable bags can decompose in time. This ensures that these bags don’t end up clutter the environment or suffocate places such as sewers, etc.
Pak-EPA met with Pakistan Business Council where the future of this project was discussed. Manufacturing details have also been requested from ICT and Capital Development Authority (CDA) in Islamabad.
The sources disclosed that the cities like Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Chiniot had been assigned a task to promote a trend of using cloth shopping bags.
