Google is now aiming to make the internet a tiny bit less annoying by removing the dreaded CAPTCHA. We’ve all come to experience how annoying it is filling out those CAPTCHA fields,
having to transcribe distorted letters or numbers to prove that we are not a malicious robot when doing something benign like opening a new email account.
On Wednesday, Google launched Invisible reCAPTCHA, a service that works as a background bot-sniffer—without a human having to do anything. Invisible CAPTCHA’s are the latest development in the “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Google acquired reCaptcha back in 2009 and updated the system in 2013 to allow for the ubiquitous “I’m not a robot” checkbox. The new invisibility system will look at factors such as how a user moves the mouse around. Shuman Ghosemajumder the chief technology officer at Shape Security and a former Google employee states, “Google also has a history of information that’s associated with that particular IP address,” pointing out that if the user is also logged into a Google account, the company will know even more about what is or isn’t normal activity. This latest iteration “creates a new sort of challenge that very advanced bots can still get around, but introduces a lot less friction to the legitimate human,” states Ghosemajumder.
