Scientists from various disciplines convened in Peshawar to emphasize the critical role of science in driving socio-economic development and attracting youth towards scientific education.
Organized by the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) at the National Center of Excellence in Geology, Peshawar University, the convention titled “Science for Socio-Economic Development” marked the commencement of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of PSF in the realm of Science and Technology.
The event, graced by the presence of outgoing Interim Provincial Minister for Education, Dr. Muhammad Qasim Jan as the chief guest, witnessed the participation of renowned scientists, PhD scholars, heads of research organizations, and students from various educational institutions across the nation.
Addressing the assembly, Dr. Qasim Jan lauded the pivotal role played by PSF in advancing Science and Technology by providing a platform for the country’s scientists. He emphasized that without fostering scientific education, Pakistan cannot ascend to the ranks of developed nations.
Dr. Qasim revealed that despite substantial investment, approximately 23 percent of the budget, in education by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, the challenge persists with 4.7 million out-of-school children.
Expressing gratitude to PSF for choosing Peshawar University as the inaugural site for celebrating 50 years of Excellence in Science and Technology, Dr. Qasim highlighted the need to alter the prevailing mindset towards acknowledging the significance of Science and Technology in national development.

During the convention, Dr. Anisa Qamar, Chairperson of the Department of Physics, delivered a presentation on “Plasma Physics and its Applications,” shedding light on cutting-edge scientific research. Dr. Taza Gul, Director of Science and Technology, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, provided insights into the department’s endeavors in promoting Science and Technology across the province.
A panel discussion featuring representatives from academia, PhD scholars, students, and media personnel delved into the challenges hindering the promotion of Science and Technology in Pakistan. The discourse aimed to identify strategies for overcoming obstacles and fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation nationwide.
