The NCSC, an integral part of the GCHQ spy agency, predicts that generative AI, coupled with large language models powering chatbots like ChatGPT, will significantly escalate the volume and impact of cyber-attacks in the next two years. The agency is particularly concerned about the potential rise in phishing attacks, where unsuspecting users are tricked into divulging sensitive information or passwords.

The crux of the issue lies in the ability of generative AI to produce convincing text that can be used in phishing emails, password reset requests, and other social engineering tactics. Even individuals with a reasonable level of cybersecurity understanding may find it challenging to identify the authenticity of such communications, making them susceptible to falling victim to cybercriminals.

The NCSC reveals that generative AI tools are already being utilized to create deceptive “lure documents” devoid of the typical errors associated with phishing attacks. Unlike earlier phishing attempts, these documents crafted by AI-powered chatbots exhibit flawless translations, spellings, and grammar, making them more convincing and harder to detect.

Ransomware attacks, a persistent threat to institutions such as the British Library and Royal Mail, are expected to surge further, aided by the sophistication of AI. The NCSC warns that AI’s capabilities lower the entry barrier for amateur cybercriminals, enabling them to access systems, gather information, paralyze computer systems, and demand cryptocurrency ransoms.

While AI’s role in offensive cyber operations is emphasized, the NCSC acknowledges its potential as a defensive tool. AI can play a crucial role in detecting and preventing cyber-attacks, as well as designing more secure systems to counter evolving threats.

The report coincides with the UK government’s introduction of the “Cyber Governance Code of Practice,” urging businesses to prioritize information security alongside financial and legal management to better equip themselves against ransomware attacks.
