The Gomal Zam Dam is a joint venture between the governments of Pakistan and the United States that has produced outstanding results.
Donald Blome, the US ambassador to Pakistan, paid a visit to the multipurpose Gomal Zam Dam project on Tuesday in the South Waziristan District of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Newly Merged Districts (NMDs).
According to a press release from the embassy, he was accompanied by Lt. General (retired) Sajjad Ghani, Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), and Muhammad Javed Marwat, Secretary of the Agriculture Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Gomal Zam Dam is a joint venture between the governments of Pakistan and the United States that has produced outstanding results.
The United States and Pakistan are collaborating to advance initiatives in water management, clean energy, and climate-smart agriculture through their “Green Alliance” framework.
By providing 191,000 additional acres to local farmers, this one project has increased agricultural production in the area by half. Additionally, it significantly increased Pakistan’s national water storage capacity, provided electricity for 20,000 homes, and mitigated over 30,000 households’ potential flood damage.
The Gomal Zam Multi-purpose Project, which includes the dam, irrigation infrastructure, and direct assistance to surrounding communities, cost $130 million to develop in partnership with the Government of Pakistan, said Ambassador Blome.
After the U.S.-funded Tarbela and Mangla Dams, the Gomal Zam Dam is Pakistan’s third-largest water storage facility. It is a crucial component of Pakistan’s infrastructure for managing climate change and ensuring overall food security. With an additional 17 megawatts of hydropower produced, the dam offers a dependable, clean energy source and gives farmers the ability to better their socioeconomic circumstances.
A dam, irrigation system, and agriculture development project in Pakistan received $130 million from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The cost of the project was split equally between the federal and provincial governments.

Qoumi Aman Jirga’s Maulana Iqbal Shah Haideri appreciated the interfaith discussion, while Imamia Council members appreciated the US delegation’s visit.
