Speakers at an international conference on “Nutrition and Sustainable Development” raised concerns about the triple burden of malnutrition in Pakistan and called for climate-smart interventions to address rising food insecurity and related issues.

The Human Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Ziauddin University (ZU) collaborated with the Nutrition Foundation of Pakistan to organise the second international conference, Nutrition and Sustainable Development.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of how climate change is affecting food systems and dietary practises as well as to emphasise the critical role that nutrition plays in achieving sustainable development goals.

Prof. Rubina Hakeem, chief nutritionist and head of the department of nutrition at the ZU, said climate change was having a significant impact on food systems and dietary patterns in her speech about how it affected food systems and dietary choices.

Dr. Naveed Bhutto, a public health nutritionist, explained that micronutrient deficiencies had become endemic in Pakistan and globally. Malnutrition’s “triple burden” included undernutrition, overnutrition/obesity, and a lack of certain micronutrients.

He stated, “Investing in nutrition is a cost-effective development driver, and reducing malnutrition can increase a overall economic productivity of Pakistan by 11%.”

Dr. Sarah Burkharat, a senior lecturer in nutrition and dietetics at the School of Health, University of Sunshine Coast, Australia, urged nutrition and dietetics professionals to work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting sustainable development during her online Zoom session.

Other people who additionally talked were Dr. Divya Vanoh, administrator and speaker of the diabetics program at Universiti Sains Malaysia, investigator Dr. Muhammad Asher Malik and ZU Favorable to Chancellor Dr. Nida Hussain.

Ziauddin University can be found in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The educationalist Ziauddin Ahmad is honored with the university’s name.

The daughter and son-in-law of Sir Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad established Ziauddin University in his honor in 1986. The Pakistan Nursing Council grants accreditation to the School of Nursing, which was established in 1986.
