With 57 member states spread across four continents, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second largest intergovernmental organisation after the United Nations. The Organization is the Muslim world’s collective voice. It works to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony among the world’s various peoples.

The Organization was founded on the decision of a historical summit held in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, on the 12th Rajab 1389 Hijra (25 September 1969) in response to the criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem.

The first meeting of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) was held in Jeddah in 1970, and it was decided to establish a permanent secretariat in Jeddah, which would be led by the organization’s secretary general. Dr. Yousef Ahmed Al-Othaimeen was appointed as the 11th Secretary General in November 2016.
