TWAS appoints Dr. Iqbal Choudhary as VP Central and South Asia

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) recently appointed internationally renowned Pakistani scientist Prof Dr. M Iqbal Choudhary as TWAS Vice President for Central and South Asia for a four-year term beginning in 2023 and ending in 2026.

The International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (KU), said in a statement that the council and members of the TWAS intended to benefit from Prof. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of ICCBS and COMSTECH Coordinator General, in promoting science in the developing world.

It is worth noting that the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, abbreviated TWAS, promotes long-term prosperity through research, education, policy, and diplomacy. The Academy is headquartered in Trieste, Italy.

It is also worth noting that Prof Iqbal Choudhary was recently awarded the 2021 Mustafa (PBUH) Prize, the Muslim World’s most prestigious prize, for his contributions to bio-organic chemistry. He has 1,175 research papers in international journals in the fields of organic and bio-organic chemistry, 76 books, and 40 chapters in books published by major US and European presses. So far, he has received 40 US patents. He has established a number of new centres to assist industries and government organisations.

Dr Iqbal’s work has been cited by researchers from around the world — 32,000 times in total — and his h-index is 70. As many as 94 local and international scholars have completed their PhD degrees under his supervision so far.

Dr Iqbal has been awarded by different Pakistani governments with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. He has been elected a fellow by renowned academies, including the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS), Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and Chemical Society of Pakistan (CSP).

Prof Iqbal has previously been honored by the president of Iran with the Khwarizmi International Award; president of Azerbaijan with the ECO Award in Education; and the prime minister of Pakistan with COMSTECH Award in Chemistry.

Vice-Chancellor University of Karachi Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi and Prof Atta Ur Rahman, ICCBS Patron-in-chief and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, congratulated Prof Choudhary for his outstanding achievement.
