STAFF REPORT LHR: As Pakistan is experiencing acute energy shortfall, there is a need to further explore more alternative energy sources so that dependence on thermal power generation is lessened gradually as it could save over $8 billion being spent annually on oil import bill in the power sector.

“Saving $8 billion could help jack up Pakistans foreign reserves, as the country used fossil fuels to generate around 65 per cent of its electricity,” said Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited Engineering, Country Head Zaigham Rizvi stated this at a seminar on energy.

The cost of components for solar home systems remained high and needed to be given subsidies, he said.

It was need of the hour, he said, the government should legislate and make it compulsory for shopping malls, multi-story buildings and govt offices to install solar systems at their premises to save energy.
