Pakistan’s dairy and beef sectors are poised for transformation through precision farming methodologies, as emphasized by industry experts on Tuesday.

Despite being the fourth-largest milk producer globally and a significant contributor to the agricultural sector, challenges persist, hindering the sectors from reaching their optimal potential, according to a news release.

Addressing these challenges and highlighting the need for advancement, experts convened at an event marking the partnership between Cloud Agri Pakistan, NASNA, an Australian livestock company, and Denkavit Nederland, a Dutch global leader in animal feed solutions.

Dr. Rana Shaukat Hussain, CEO of Cloud Agri Pakistan & Global Business Director of Cloud Agri Group, stated that the collaboration aims not only to introduce superior livestock and nutrition solutions but also to facilitate knowledge exchange and implement international best practices.

The partnership will see NASNA as the exclusive provider of high-quality Australian dairy and beef animals, while Denkavit will supply advanced calf rearing solutions. By integrating superior cattle breeds and modern nutrition solutions, the initiative seeks to elevate Pakistan’s dairy and livestock sectors to global standards, empowering local farmers and stakeholders.

Henny Fokel de Vries, the Dutch Ambassador to Pakistan, expressed optimism that the collaboration between Dutch and Pakistani companies, particularly Cloud Agri, would modernize Pakistan’s livestock sector. She highlighted historic cooperation between Pakistan and the Netherlands in dairy and livestock, pledging support for companies operating in the sector.

As part of the partnership, a comprehensive knowledge-sharing framework will equip farmers with modern farming and livestock management techniques to meet increasing demand for dairy and protein needs while enhancing food security and meeting international standards for export.

The government of Punjab is also taking steps to improve the genetics of local cattle breeds and increase milk production through various policy interventions, including AI services, breeding programs, capacity building, and financial support.

Dr. Sajjad Hussain Sanghi, DG Research L&DD Punjab, noted the historical dominance of small-scale producers in Pakistan’s livestock sector but highlighted a gradual shift towards modern technologies and practices. Efforts are underway to develop FMD free programs and facilitate global companies to introduce advanced vaccine technologies.

However, challenges such as production inefficiencies, lack of awareness about modern techniques, and inadequate infrastructure persist, necessitating collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors.

Universities like UVAS are playing a vital role in bridging the gap between academia and industry, with initiatives like veterinary academies and partnerships with private companies.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mazhar Ayaz, Vice Chancellor of CUVAS Bahawalpur, emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to chart a pathway towards a sustainable future for Pakistan’s dairy and beef sectors.

Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Ex VC UVAS/ UED, highlighted the broader vision of the collaboration beyond commercial interests, aiming for enduring partnerships that benefit Pakistani farmers and strengthen trade relations with the Netherlands and Australia.

In conclusion, the push for precision farming and modernization in Pakistan’s dairy and beef sectors signifies a concerted effort towards sustainable growth, enhanced productivity, and improved livelihoods for stakeholders across the country.
