The Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (retd), recently visited the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, also known as the K-IV Project, to assess the progress of this vital initiative. The K-IV Project aims to provide Karachi with 650 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from Keenjhar Lake, with construction taking place in two phases.

As of now, WAPDA is actively working on Phase-I of the K-IV Project, slated for completion in October 2024. This initial phase is expected to supply 260 MGD to Karachi, addressing critical water needs for the city. The estimated cost for Phase-I is Rs 126 billion, with Rs. 40 billion already expended, and a cumulative progress of 40% achieved.

During the visit, Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani toured various project sites, including the intake structure, pumping stations, water conveyance system with pressurized pipes, reservoirs, filtration plants, project offices, colony, and the approach road. The project team provided detailed briefings on the progress made, emphasizing that construction activities were underway at all eight sites.

The K-IV Project is crucial for addressing Karachi’s water supply challenges, and WAPDA is committed to completing it on schedule. The Chairman stressed that the timely provision of funds is critical to meeting project deadlines. Additionally, discussions during the visit covered issues related to the augmentation of the water distribution system by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and the power component, to be arranged by the Sindh Government.

Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani highlighted the importance of close collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of the K-IV Project. He emphasized the significance of coordinating efforts for the power component and the planned augmentation of the water distribution system. The Chairman emphasized that the successful completion of the project is vital for the benefit of the people of Karachi.

The K-IV Project represents a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing Karachi’s water supply capabilities. As one of the largest cities in Pakistan, Karachi faces growing demands for water, and projects like K-IV play a crucial role in addressing these challenges.

WAPDA’s ongoing efforts and commitment to the timely completion of the project underscore the strategic importance of water infrastructure projects in ensuring sustainable urban development and meeting the needs of rapidly growing metropolitan areas.
