NPak Energy Installs Groundbreaking 1-MW Solar Power Plant In Hunza

NPak Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), has successfully inaugurated a 1-MW solar power plant in the Hunza district of Gilgit-Baltistan. This initiative marks a historic public-private partnership, representing the region’s first venture into large-scale clean energy production, addressing its acute energy deficit and promoting sustainable practices for remote communities.

Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level, the solar plant boasts more than 2,300 state-of-the-art photovoltaic panels.

This innovative facility is set to generate 1,600 MWh of electricity annually, catering to the energy needs of local households and businesses. Beyond providing a reliable power source, the project aims to contribute significantly to global climate change mitigation by preventing over 1,100 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions each year. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to the emissions from more than 240 gas-fueled cars annually, as calculated by the US EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

At the inauguration ceremony on November 17, Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Honourable Haji Gulbar Khan, expressed the government’s strong support for clean and green energy solutions. He commended the Aga Khan Development Network for commissioning the solar power plant and pledged the provincial government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy programs to alleviate power shortages in the region.

NPak Energy has solidified its commitment through a 30-year Concession Agreement with the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan. The overarching goal is to enhance public service delivery by establishing a sustainable, self-reliant utility operation. The aim of solar power plant is to make clean electricity accessible, reliable, and affordable to every household in the Hunza district, thereby catalyzing economic opportunities and job creation.

CEO of NPak Energy Ltd, Mr. Mansoor Dhanani, emphasized the organization’s pride in contributing to rural electrification, building on the Aga Khan Development Network’s successful renewable energy programs in the region.

Dhanani expressed optimism about NPak Energy’s continued growth and success in the Hunza District, underscoring the company’s dedication to bringing sustainable energy solutions to local communities.

This momentous project not only addresses the immediate energy needs of Gilgit-Baltistan but also sets a powerful precedent for future collaborations between public and private entities in advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions on a global scale.
