Pakistan is gearing up for the upcoming COP28 conference in Dubai, a crucial gathering addressing climate change. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), orchestrated a special discussion to strategize for the event. This pre-COP28 dialogue convened participants from Pakistan and across the globe to discuss Pakistan’s climate resilience strategies.

COP28, hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Dubai, aims to play a significant role in the fight against climate change. Pakistani leaders, including Mr. Ahmad Irfan Aslam, responsible for Climate Change, highlighted the importance of integrating climate change plans into various sectors of Pakistan’s economy. They discussed the commitments made in the Paris Agreement and ongoing efforts to mitigate climate change impacts while acknowledging the need for further action. The leaders underscored that addressing climate change is not optional; it is a collective imperative to secure a sustainable environment for future generations.
Bilal Anwar, CEO of NDRMF, outlined the challenges posed by climate change and stressed the importance of preparedness and communal collaboration to confront these challenges. He warned that without cohesive planning and teamwork, efforts would be futile. COP28’s agenda includes crucial topics such as Loss and Damage, Climate Finance, and the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP). Pakistan aims to ensure its voice is heard, particularly given its vulnerability to climate change.
The talk in Dubai aimed to garner diverse perspectives for shaping Pakistan’s strategy at COP28. Urgency was emphasized, considering the dwindling time, resources, and patience. Successes from the previous climate meeting in Sharm El Sheikh, particularly in areas like climate justice and finance for addressing loss and damage, provided optimism. The UAE envisions COP28 as an inclusive conference of action, involving not only government leaders but also representatives from private sectors, including industries such as oil and gas and renewable energy.
As Pakistan readies itself for COP28 in Dubai, the nation faces climate challenges such as floods, droughts, and melting glaciers. Despite these challenges, Pakistan is committed to addressing them and contributing to the global fight against climate change. The country has pledged significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and it is set to host World Environment Day in 2023.

According to the UAE ambassador to Pakistan, Hamad Obaid Al-Zaabi, COP28 presents an excellent opportunity for Pakistan to engage in discussions on assisting countries impacted by climate change.
