DevCareer And TBD Partner To Host Africa's First Web3 Hackathon

African non-profit organization DevCareer has joined forces with TBD, a platform dedicated to opening decentralized finance to developers, to introduce Web3 technology to Africa through the continent’s inaugural Web3 hackathon.

Web3, a decentralized platform that facilitates decentralized applications (dapps) and protocols, represents a significant leap beyond the current web, incorporating an identity layer. Through the DevCareer hackathon, developers, designers, writers, and tech enthusiasts from across Africa are invited to delve into Web3, exploring its potential and building autonomous technologies.

The hackathon presents an opportunity to connect, showcase skills, and compete for a substantial $30,000 prize pool, fostering hands-on engagement with this transformative technology.

The virtual hackathon, spanning from November 20th to December 15th, unfolds in three distinct phases. The Learning Phase kicks off with TBD staff leading a foundational webinar, equipping participants with essential Web3 development resources.

Following this, the Writing Phase encourages participants to document and elucidate their solutions through public posts and articles, fostering shared learning within the community. The culminating Building Phase challenges teams to apply Web3 to address real-world problems, showcasing the practical applications of this cutting-edge technology.

While the hackathon is open to all, teams must comprise up to four members, including at least one woman, promoting diversity and collaboration. Participants will collectively build web apps addressing tangible issues, gaining insights into how Web3 infrastructure can generate innovative solutions and value. The final phase involves pitching these projects to judges for a chance at the prize pool.

DevCareer expressed excitement about delivering the potential of Web3 to African talent through this innovative and collaborative platform. The organization aims to ignite transformative, creative ideas and motivate participants to craft inventive Web3 solutions that can contribute to the region’s technological advancement.

Participants are required to commit significant time over the four-week duration, fostering a dedicated and immersive experience. Registration closed on November 20th, with teams submitting their names, emails, and numbers during this period or in the Learning Phase.

Encouraging documentation of the project journey through articles and blogs, the hackathon emphasizes the use of Web3.js for building, ensuring unique solutions based on the focus of each app. The final projects will be presented to judges through video calls, providing an opportunity for participants to showcase their work and receive valuable feedback.

By spearheading initiatives like this hackathon, DevCareer and TBD aim to democratize access to emerging technologies like Web3 across Africa. Instead of concentrating knowledge and resources, these platforms seek to distribute capabilities, fostering locally-driven innovation and enabling broader decentralized participation in the technological landscape.
