Egyptian Healthtech Startup Secures $3.6M To Revolutionize Diabetes

Almouneer, an Egyptian healthtech startup, has achieved a noteworthy milestone by successfully raising $3.6 million in initial investment. This represents a significant advancement in the company’s ambition to change healthcare for those suffering from chronic illnesses including diabetes and obesity.

The funding round was spearheaded by Dubai-based Global Ventures, with additional support from international investors such as Proparco, Digital Africa via the Bridge Fund, Wrightwood Investments, and others.

Founded in 2016 by Noha Khater and Rania Kadry in Giza, Egypt, Almouneer initially operated as a group of technology-driven clinics with a primary focus on ophthalmology.

Over time, the Egyptian healthtech startup shifted its approach to provide operational support to external doctors and healthcare providers. Leveraging advanced practice management software encompassing integrated financial systems, electronic health records, and booking systems, Almouneer has been at the forefront of redefining healthcare management.

At the core of Almouneer’s offerings is DRU, a patient-centric, digitally-enabled lifestyle and diabetes management platform. DRU empowers patients to effortlessly upload their medical records, access up-to-date medical data and current medications, connect with healthcare professionals via chat or phone, and subscribe to personalized treatment and nutrition plans. This innovative platform has the potential to revolutionize the way patients with chronic diseases manage their health and engage with their healthcare providers.

One of DRU’s key features is its ability to provide individualized plans for obesity and uncontrolled diabetes, with a focus on reducing blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The platform’s revenue model is driven by customized plans and subscriptions, with plans to deduct a percentage from doctor referral fees, along with marketplace revenue. The marketplace will offer essential supplies like blood sugar strips, glucose monitors, limb care products, and specialized diet plans.

Looking ahead, Almouneer is set to launch the DRU app for doctors in Q1 2024. The company also has plans to expand its provider ecosystem to encompass physicians, health coaches, nutritionists, and laboratories. With a current reach spanning over 120,000 patients across nine hospitals and clinics in Egypt, Almouneer is poised to make a substantial impact in the realm of healthcare.

Noha Khater, co-founder at Almouneer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Global Ventures and other esteemed investors, emphasizing the company’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and affordability of healthcare for individuals grappling with diabetes and obesity. Khater underscored that the investment will be instrumental in expanding product offerings, entering new markets, and continuing to deliver top-notch care to patients.
