Pending approval, the initiative will involve the establishment of six new solar plants within the state, accompanied by 13 power purchase agreements, collectively boasting a capacity of 772 MW. Dominion Energy, along with other prominent U.S. utility companies engaged in renewable ventures, stands to benefit from the recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act, a $430 billion legislation designed to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
This legislation allocates substantial funds in the form of tax credits and direct payments to bolster renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and battery technologies. Dominion’s proposal is poised to play a pivotal role in Virginia’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable energy landscape.
While Dominion Energy anticipates an estimated increase of approximately $1.54 in the average residential customer’s monthly bill to fund these projects, the company assures that the benefits of cleaner energy and reduced environmental impact will outweigh this cost. Construction for these utilities is slated for completion between 2024 and 2026.
In addition to this solar expansion endeavor, Dominion Energy remains steadfast in its commitment to the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, a monumental undertaking with an approximate budget of $10 billion. Progress is reported to be on track, with expectations of completion in late 2026.
