China-Pakistan To Set up Natural Disaster Centre in Karakoram Mountains

The China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences will establish a natural disaster observation and research centre in the Karakoram Mountains in conjunction with Karakoram International University in an effort to improve collaboration on natural disaster monitoring.

At a panel discussion with the China-SCO Geosciences Cooperation Research Centre and the All-Pakistan Chinese Enterprises Association (APCEA) held here, Hong Tianhua, Executive Director and Researcher of the Joint Research Centre, made this claim.

According to Hong Tianhua, who spoke to China Economic Net on Tuesday, “The research centre in Pakistan, to be completed in Passu, GB within three years, will monitor glacial lake outbursts, glacier debris flow, and landslides by analysing the data of glaciers, snow cover, meteorology, hydrology, and soil.”

A bridge for bilateral cooperation on topics like natural disasters, the ecological environment, resource development, and the sustainable development of CPEC, the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

The Joint Research Centre’s data management and information service system, along with the CPEC multi-factor database, were instrumental in last year’s effort to combat the floods by disseminating 26 data sets about the torrential downpour.

Hong Tianhua informed the audience that the Joint Research Centre will establish a Digital CPEC platform based on it this year. The acquisition, preservation, sharing, and utilisation of data on ecological environments and disaster prevention and reduction of CPEC will be supported by the Digital CPEC platform, he continued.

The China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) is a scientific research and talent education institution located at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan. It is managed by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMHE, CAS). The CPJRC is part of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

In the area of earth sciences, CPJRC acts as a conduit and platform for collaboration between China and Pakistan in scientific research and education. In order to support the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, it also focuses on natural disasters, the ecological environment, resource development, and sustainable development (CPEC).
