The Adora Magic City, the first large cruise ship in the world with 5G capabilities, is slated to undock in Shanghai on Tuesday.

After completing extensive tests in the dock, the ship will proceed to the phase of constructing the wharf. It is intended to launch the trial voyage in July and conduct a second trial voyage in August in order to finish and deliver the ship by the end of the year.

The ship will set out on a variety of international routes connecting Shanghai, its home port, to neighbouring nations and regions, including Japan and Southeast Asia, once it is expected to be delivered by the end of this year.

The local immigration checkpoint has created advance exit plans to guarantee safe and effective customs clearance.

The cruise ship, which has a length of 323.6 metres and a gross tonnage of 135,500 tonnes and can accommodate up to 5,246 passengers, was jointly created by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and Cruise Technology Development Co., Ltd., both of which are subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

The Adora Magic City project team successfully addressed three key technologies over the course of more than three years: weight control, vibration and noise reduction, and safe return to port. These noteworthy accomplishments have opened the door for numerous technological advances, which have successfully closed the gap in the production of large, domestically constructed cruise ships.

In order to ensure the safe evacuation of passengers and crew members in emergency situations, tests of the ship’s lifeboat release mechanisms were carried out on June 3.

A lifeboat’s drop and return time over a distance of nine metres were measured, and the speed was then determined, according to Xue Yabin, deputy director of CSSC’s No. 2 Final Assembly Department.

The cruise ship is equipped with 20 lifeboats, giving it the ability to evacuate every passenger in the event of an emergency. These lifeboats are fully stocked with food and water, as well as signal shells, to keep everyone on board fed and hydrated for three to five days.

The cruise ship will also be equipped with cutting-edge wireless communication technology, giving guests a seamless network experience similar to that on land. Onboard, there will be Wi-Fi 6 and mobile 5G networks.
