IAEA-PAK Cooperation To Improve Nuclear Security Regime

Pakistan is one of the IAEA’s founding members. In 2005, Pakistan and the IAEA signed a “Nuclear Security Cooperation Program” to improve the effectiveness of the country’s nuclear security regime with IAEA assistance.

Ms. Elena Buglova, Director Division of Nuclear Security (NSNS), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during her visit to Pakistan, expressed her gratitude for Pakistan’s assistance in the implementation of the IAEA-Pakistan Nuclear Security Cooperation Program.

Ms. Buglova and her team were in Pakistan from January 17 to 19, reviewing progress under the Nuclear Security Cooperation Program and discussing future cooperation between the IAEA and Pakistan, according to a news release issued.

Under this program, the agency assisted in improving security measures at a nuclear power plant and nuclear medical centers, developing training infrastructure, providing radiation protection, detection equipment and human resource development to combat the illicit trafficking of radioactive materials.

The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) is the lead agency in charge of coordinating all programme activities.

Ms. Buglova met with Mr. Faizan Mansoor, Chairman PNRA, and Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman PAEC, during her visit. She was briefed on the IAEA-Pakistan Nuclear Security Cooperation Program’s accomplishments. While future collaboration opportunities were also discussed.

Ms. Buglova expressed her gratitude to Pakistan for its assistance in implementing the IAEA-Pakistan Nuclear Security Cooperation Program.

Ms. Buglova also toured various training facilities at Pakistan’s Center of Excellence (PCENS) and the National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS), which recently received IAEA Collaborating Center status for nuclear security training and technical support.

She praised the capabilities of PCENS, NISAS, and PIEAS in terms of capacity building for national organisations with nuclear security responsibilities and nuclear security measures  taken by Pakistan that are in accordance with the IAEA recommendations.

She acknowledged Pakistan’s offer and support to the IAEA for the implementation of the IAEA’s nuclear security programme, as well as the conduct of regional and international training, expert, and services missions.

Pakistan appreciates the IAEA’s ongoing assistance in improving its nuclear security regime, including human resource development and associated training infrastructure, which includes state-of-the-art labs outfitted with cutting-edge technology.
