Antarabudaya Announces First AFS STEM Scholarships Programs

Antarabudaya Malaysia, a non-profit volunteer-driven organisation focused on intercultural learning across communities and a member of AFS Intercultural Programs, has announced the launch of the first AFS Global STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs with 10 full scholarships for young Malaysians.

The four-month intercultural programme combines digital and in-person learning where participants from more than 18 countries worldwide will enrich their knowledge through the development of global competencies in problem-solving, analytical skills, intercultural understanding, sustainability and social innovation.

The annual STEM scholarships programs for 100 participants funded by global energy company BP starts with a 12-week virtual e-learning curriculum from their home countries, culminating in student-led social impact projects and presentations offering potential solutions to real-world challenges with emphasis on sustainability and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The topic of study includes climate change and the energy transition.

Upon successful completion of the virtual curriculum co-developed between AFS International and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, the STEM scholars will travel on a four-week immersive experience to one of the six participating AFS destinations: Brazil, China, Egypt, Europe, India or the US.

They will also participate in community service and have the opportunity to visit local innovative, sustainability-focused operations to see firsthand how companies and organisations at the destination country use STEM skills to address industry and societal challenges around sustainability issues.

Open to Malaysian citizens born between Nov 25, 2005, and March 25, 2008, who are able to participate fully both online and in a classroom setting in a programme conducted in English; have a high interest in STEM, sustainability and intercultural learning; are curious and willing to interact with diverse people from other cultures; and are able to travel to one of the six AFS destinations between June and August.

Antarabudaya Malaysia is a Malaysian organization that promotes cultural exchange and international understanding through educational and cultural exchange programs.
