Shahbaz Sharif criticized that the Alternative Energy Policy announced two years ago, in 2020, not only failed, but also attracted no foreign investment
Global fuel prices have caused panic throughout the world. As an alternative to expensive imported fuel, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif urged the concerned authorities to complete comprehensive planning for the completion of low-cost solar power projects at earliest. In addition, the PM demanded for an inquiry report regarding the amount received as fuel price adjustment in electricity bills and the delay in the completion of power projects during the last four years of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regime. Shahbaz Sharif criticized that the Alternative Energy Policy announced two years ago, in 2020, not only failed, but also attracted no foreign investment.
In the meeting, he shared that solar systems will be provided to the people as an alternative to the expensive power generated using imported fuel, and that Balochistan would be given special consideration in the provision of solar systems. In addition to the reduction in import bill that will be caused due to solarization, low-cost and environment-friendly electricity would also be generated. It was explained in the meeting that how low-cost solarization can be used as a substitute to expensive imported fuel. Solarization projects of 14000 MW will be initiated in the upcoming months, with 9000 MW completed first. It was also mentioned that solar systems would be sold at discounted prices as well tax incentives shall be provided. Electricity prices in Pakistan are rapidly increasing which has caused serious problems for households as well as business community. Due to scorching weather, electricity consumption has been increased and people are cursing the government for continuously increasing power charges. Move towards solarization would also be full of challenges and beyond affordability for a vast majority but it seems to be the only viable substitute to switch on.
