Digital technology is an important tool for post-Covid-19, said National Assembly president Heng Samrin who attended the 42nd General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) yesterday.
In the current circumstances, he said digital technology and science will play an increasingly important role to boost the economic growth for post-Covid-19 crisis and also promoting new sustainable economic growth and greater resilience for other untoward eventualities.
“The world in the context of the fourth industrial revolution is growing and evolving rapidly in the field of digital technology and science. Therefore, a clear policy on these will contribute to boosting the economic growth sustainably”, he said in his keynote address.
The government recently launched the ‘Digital Economy and Social Policy Framework 2021-2035’ to build fresh and flexible momentum into the country’s information and communication technology (ICT) sector and calibrate the pace of its development to leapfrog into the digital era, as a promising new source of opportunities to boost productivity, efficiency, and economic competitiveness.
This policy will contribute to boost and promote the national economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, Samrin said.
He called on Asean and AIPA member states to boost digitalisation which is important for regional economic recovery and promote social welfare based on a new normal way of life.
Samrin urged all stakeholders to strengthen and expand regional cooperation on digital connectivity, digital trade, cross-border data flow, cyber security, and environmental and friendly digitalisation.
He also invited all AIPA members to attend the 11th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP11) to be held in Cambodia at the end of this year.
The 42nd AIPA is hosted from yesterday to Wednesday by Brunei under the theme “Forging Parliamentary Cooperation in Digital Inclusion towards ASEAN Community 2025”.
AIPA consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
