What is the Epsilon strain? and a novel variant Coronavirus in Pakistan is detected five cases of Epsilon coronavirus strain in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

According to reports, health authorities in Lahore have detected five cases of Epsilon coronavirus strain in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Amid a surge in coronavirus cases in Pakistan, health authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab province have issued an alert following the detection of five cases of Epsilon strain of Covid-19 in Lahore, according to reports published in the Dawn.

According to some medical experts in Pakistan, as reported by the Dawn, the variant is believed to be more resistant to Covid-19 vaccines and has been declared a new threat for vaccinated people, who may get infected again.

Medical experts say the Epsilon strain detected in Lahore was highly infectious and almost as highly transmissible as the Delta variant. The Delta variant, first detected in India, has become the most dominant strain of Covid-19 in Pakistan.

The virus strain B.1.429 which was first detected in California is reportedly resistant to coronavirus vaccines.

US Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had earlier categorised the strain as “variants of concern” due to a surge in cases in California.
