This is unlike the current wireless charging technologies based on the Qi standard in which power transfers wirelessly using inductive charging over a distance of up to four centimeters.

Xiaomi claims that the Mi Air Charge is capable of delivering 5-watt of remote power to multiple devices within a radius of several meters and even through certain physical obstacles.

However, the company has confirmed that the new charging technology will not be commercially available this year but we can expect a release date sometime in 2022.

Mi Air Charge Technology – How it works?

The new technology works by making use of Xiaomi’s self-developed isolated charging pile with five phase interference antennas which can accurately detect the location of the smartphone even through physical objects.

A phase control array made of 144 antennas then transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.

On the smartphone side, Xiaomi has also developed a miniaturized antenna array with built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”.

“Beacon antenna broadcasts position information with low power consumption. The receiving antenna array composed of 14 antennas converts the millimeter wave signal emitted by the charging pile into electric energy through the rectifier circuit, to turn the sci-fi charging experience into reality.” stated the company on its official blog.

“In the near future, Xiaomi’s self-developed space isolation charging technology will also be able to work with smart watches, bracelets and other wearable devices.” stated the company.

“Soon our living room devices, including speakers, desk lamps and other small smart home products, will all be built upon a wireless power supply design, completely free of wires, making our living rooms truly wireless.” it added.
